Dot2Dot is a 3D drawing app that lets you collaborate with as many users as you choose.

The app utilizes the motion sensors of your smart phone for 3D sketching  and exploring together on multiple screens, breaking the physical barrier of the 2d canvas.

This project was created by Adarsh Kosuru & Alon Chitayat for  Shawn Van Every’s “Always on , Always Connected”  class,

part of the Interactive Telecommunications Graduate Program at NYU.

Concept:

Picasso’s “Light Drawings” (1949) is series of long exposure photographs. These experiments of light and motion were part of a collaborative work between Picasso and Gjon Mili, a photographer and light innovator. Picasso’s “air drawing” formed any new quality to his line – the recording of his motion in space.

This remarkable experiment produced images that reshape the traditional 2d drawing into a 3d thread sculpture. They are for some extend an analog form of GIF animations as the hold a sequence of moments in each photo.

This photography technique served as a view finder to unveil an invisible layer of reality.

This project was inspired by the work of 3D drawing pioneers, including Evan Roth, Zach Lieberman, Amit Pitaru & James Patterson ( rhondaforever.com).

The Technology:

Dot2Dot uses accelerometer & gyro data to manipulate a spatial canvas as you tilt your phone.

You draw on the screen  by using one finger, with two fingers you can also rotate the model.

The app uses web sockets technology to pass the 3d drawing data to multiple users. As Each of them draws his line as added on all of the connected screens.
